Local undersea celeb and Team IN-SEA member Ashley Chapman has not only achieved her goal of breaking the Women’s CNF (Constant Weight/No Fins) World Record… she did it TWICE!! First on Friday to 63 meters and then today to 65 meters… that’s 213+ feet. WITHOUT FINS!!!

At the time of this post we have not yet had the chance to speak with Ashley, but Francesca Koe of DeerperBlue.com has appropriately summed up the accomplishment by stating that she is “Officially The Deepest Unassisted Woman In The World”

This excerpt is from an interview on Freedive Blog with US Team Member and National CWT (Constant Weight) Record Holder Erin Magee after her first record breaking dive:

Ashley Chapman, well-known no-fins specialist, made a dive to 63m/ 206 feet in 3:01 today officially taking the Women’s World Record for Constant Weight without Fins from previous record-holder, Natalia Molchanova of Russia. Ashley’s done this dive and deeper several times in training, but when asked about receiving her first world record Ashley said, “When I did the dive in practice it was easy- when I did the dive today with my heart beating 200 bpm it was about 10 times harder, but now that the anxiety is gone, we’ll see how much further I can go!”

Her husband and internationally acclaimed videographer Ren Chapman was there to document the event, see the amazing video of her first dive below:

Team IN-SEA member Ashley Futral Chapman has had her eyes set on attaining the women’s World Record for Unassisted Freediving (CNF/Constant Weight-NO FINS) and has been training at Dean’s Blue Hole on Long Island in the Bahamas with her husband … Continue reading →

Team IN-SEA member Ashley Futral Chapman has had her eyes set on attaining the women’s World Record for Unassisted Freediving (CNF/Constant Weight-NO FINS) and has been training at Dean’s Blue Hole on Long Island in the Bahamas with her husband and safety diver Ren. The current record is held by a Russian diver and stands at 62 meters, or about 205 feet deep. Remember, this is breaststroking down with one breath of air!

Ashley achieved the Pan-American record last May in Grand Cayman at the Deja Blue event where she also made an attempt for the WR. She achieved the depth and claimed the tag but her surface protocol was not clean enough for the judges to award her credit for the dive.

Having a year to think about that dive has done nothing but motivate Ashley to train to her full potential. The thing is, no one knows where her limit is because she remains on a steady improvement curve. Although she’s a relative newcomer to the sport, Ashley was invited to join Team USA after only a few years of diving and since then she has competed and trained all over the world with some of the most talented athletes in the sport.

And last week, on a training dive in the Bahamas safetied by her husband Ren, Ashley Futral Chapman broke that World Record… by 3 full meters!!!

Now don’t get too excited, it doesn’t count until she does it at a sanctioned event with AIDA certified judges present. Her opportunity to make history comes the first week of May at Deja Blue III in Grand Cayman.

Stay tuned for continuing coverage of Ashley’s historic effort to put her name and beloved state of NC in the AIDA Record Books!!!
