Between the five of us on the boat, there was over 100 years of sea time represented and still… still, on this day we got giddy like yard apes when this pod of Atlantic Spotted Dolphin decided to hitch a ride on our bow wave.
The ocean’s surface was textureless, as if the air-water interface was non-existent and the two just blended into one another. And as we craned our heads over and around the handrail with cameras of all sorts filling up their memory cards, the individual animals seemed to be equally fascinated rolling on their sides matching the boat’s speed in perfect position to catch a glimpse of the camouflage monkeys above.
Sighting dolphins is common off the North Carolina coast and I’ll admit that perhaps over
the years I’ve become jaded to certain marine life encounters…
…but then again, how can you not stare in awe and envy at the most perfectly suited and aptly abled creature in the great blue sea!!
